
Massive Fire in LaMotte Destroys Midwest Legacy Beef Facility
According to a release from the Jackson County Sherrif's Office, a large commercial structure fire started early Sunday, March 1st, 2026, and resulted in the total loss of Midwest Legacy Beef in LaMotte.

Authorities report that at approximately 5:40 a.m., emergency responders were notified of a fire at 522 Elm Street in LaMotte. Due to the significant size of the facility, a multi-agency response was initiated. Fire departments from LaMotte, Bellevue, Maquoketa, Andrew, Springbrook, Preston, Miles, Bernard and Key West were dispatched to assist in containing the blaze.
In addition to local fire crews, the Sheriff’s Office was supported by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Iowa State Patrol to help secure the area and manage the scene. The Iowa Department of Public Safety Fire Marshal Division responded and has taken the lead in determining the origin and cause of the fire. The investigation remains ongoing. Thankfully, no injuries were reported in connection with the blaze.
Law enforcement officials are requesting that anyone in the area who may have surveillance footage or information from the early morning hours of March 1st to please contact Sgt. Kilburg said the Sheriff’s Office appreciates the cooperation and assistance of the community as officials continue to investigate the incident.
Midwest Legacy Beef is a family-owned business specializing in raw beef-based pet food products. The company has served customers across the region with frozen and freeze-dried options marketed toward pet owners seeking raw feeding alternatives.
In a statement shared on Facebook, the owners described the fire as a devastating loss for their family and business. They expressed appreciation for the rapid response from volunteer firefighters, EMTs, deputies and conservation officers who worked extended hours to battle the blaze. The family also acknowledged the outpouring of support from customers and community members.
While operations have been halted following the destruction of the facility, the owners indicated they are working towards a plan to resume service, and emphasized that it is their intention to rebuild and return to serving customers.
