According to a recent press release, residents in northeast Dubuque may notice some extra activity around their neighborhood fire hydrants beginning today, Friday, February 27th. It's time for a routine check-up, as the City of Dubuque begins a proactive water leak detection survey. The work is expected to continue through the middle of next week and will take place throughout the day and into the evening. This work will be done through the weekend as well, to help minimize traffic disruptions. Quick note for residents of the area, the survey will not interrupt your household water service.

The City has contracted Westrum Leak Detection, Inc. of Stratford, Iowa, to perform the survey. Crews will focus exclusively on Pressure Zone 2, which serves the northeastern portion of Dubuque. No other areas of the city will be impacted during this project.

The purpose of the survey is to identify any potential leaks within the areas water system before they become costly problems. Even small underground leaks can waste significant amounts of treated drinking water and may eventually cause infrastructure damage or service disruptions. In this way, Dubuque can prioritize preventative maintenance, reduce water loss, and maintain reliable service for residents.

Survey's begin with technicians visiting public fire hydrants throughout Pressure Zone 2 and using specialized acoustic listening equipment to detect the sound of water moving beneath the surface. Because water escaping from a pipe creates a distinct noise, trained crews can “listen” through hydrants and valves to determine if a leak is present. If unusual water noise is detected, a follow-up visit will be scheduled during evening hours when overall water usage is lower. This allows for more accurate pinpointing of potential leaks in water mains or, in some cases, private service lines. Curious about the equipment and how it works? Check out the video below.

Residents who see crews working near hydrants can be assured this is routine maintenance designed to protect Dubuque’s water system, and your bottom dollar. For more information, community members may contact the City of Dubuque Water Distribution Division at 563-589-4291.
