Adult sport and co-ed leagues can be a lot of fun. I remember the early days when I was on a beer-league slow-pitch softball team with some of my old work buddies. It was always a blast. Nothing like a 6-foot-4-inch, 300-pound meat counter guy in a knee brace going yard on some poor schmuck from another local business. Well, here's your chance to relive those glory days in Dubuque, and you can choose just how seriously you take it, or not.

The City of Dubuque Recreation Division is once again opening registration for its Adult Softball and Volleyball Leagues, and whether you’re still chasing dingers or just chasing a reason to get off the couch, there’s a spot for you. These leagues are built for fun first, but don’t worry, there’s still plenty of competition if that’s your thing. With A (competitive), B (intermediate), and C (recreational) divisions, you can decide whether you’re going full throttle or just happy to get in a good stretch in the game.

Softball kicks off the week of April 26th at McAleece Park, with games Sunday through Friday at good old-fashioned Midwest times: 6, 7, or 8 PM. It’s a 12-game season, and leagues are available for men, women, and co-ed teams. Grab your buddies, your coworkers, your neighbors, or that friend who swears "they used to hit dingers" or “were really fast,” and make a team out of it. Team fees are $540 for resident teams and $565 for non-residents, with a reduced $360 fee for Tuesday men’s “C” and Wednesday coed leagues.

Volleyball players, you’re not left out either: leagues begin the week of May 6th at Flora Park, with Wednesday night women’s leagues and Thursday night co-ed leagues. Matches are played at 6:30 or 7:30 PM, making it easy to sneak in a little competition after work. Registration is open now, with a deadline of Friday, April 17th, and team fees set at $210 for resident teams and $235 for non-residents.

Beyond the laughs and friendly trash talk, these leagues are a great way to stay active, meet new people, and actually enjoy exercising without it feeling like a chore... or you could continue to work on those progressively-lighter 12-ounce curls, while waiting to bat. It’s summer in Dubuque. Might as well be outside, enjoying a warm night with a cold one, swapping stories about the time that 300-pounder hit an in-the-park homerun. What a sight; the dude needed oxygen after.

Registration is open now, but deadlines are coming up fast. Those glory days aren’t as far behind you as you think, or maybe they are. I will say they’re a whole lot more fun when you’re sharing them with friends.
