The University of Iowa is waving goodbye to Pat Green's "Wave on Wave."

They're also asking all Hawkeye fans for a new song to facilitate the iconic "Hawkeye Wave" tradition for Iowa sporting events.

Since 2017, Hawkeye loyalists, from fans to athletes and even the coaching staff, waved in unison as Green's infectious hit from the early-2000s blared over the loud-speakers. The move was meant to redirect attention from the field over to UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital in support of pediatric patients and their families.

Pat Green even went so far as to embrace his song being chosen, performing it at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, IA and starring in a video about the "Wave."

Now it's time for a new song to take the place of "Wave on Wave."

The University of Iowa decided to leave the next song up to the fans because, after all, "it's their tradition." Fans now have until July 11th, 2022 to cast their vote for the new song.

From there, the decision will more-or-less come down to a bracket style tournament (how fitting). Fans will be able to cast their votes again once the pool is narrowed down to eight songs. Then four. And then two, which will decide the next "Hawkeye Wave" anthem.

The song that will replace Green's "Wave on Wave" will be announced on August 1st.

"The Hawkeye Wave is the best tradition in college sports," the voting page on the Hawkeye Sports website says. "When the Kinnick clock hits zero, at the end of the first quarter, 70,000+ football fans turn their attention from the field to UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital. In unison, they wave to the pediatric patients and their families watching the game. The patients and family members view this genuine act of kindness as life-changing, inspiring…a wave of hope."

The "Hawkeye Wave" is a lovely tradition that will keep going, albeit to a different tune. Cast your vote here and keep tabs when the final songs are chosen!
