Congratulations to the Dubuque Hempstead Girls cross country team.  Hempstead won the first girls cross country state championship in school history today in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Defending individual state champion Keelee Leitzen finished fifth overall in 18:24.73, Sophomore classmate Julia Gehl followed in sixth at 18:30.20. The Mustangs scored 108 points to defeat second place finisher Pleasant Valley by 24 points.

Other finishes were:

Brooke O’Brien placed 27th in 19:27.68

Evie Henneberry in 30th in 19:33.29

Natalie Schlichte in 66th in 20:24.03.

Maddie Digman took 82nd and Ellie Hermiston finished 123rd but did not score for the Mustangs.

The top five boy names and top five girl names are listed for each state, as well as the number of babies born in 2018 with that name. Historically common names like Michael only made the top five in three states, while the less common name Harper ranks in the top five for 22 states.
