Waking up early to attend the Saturday Farmer's Market can be challenging for some. So that's what inspired Andie Donnan & Danielle Stowell to create the fun and dynamic mid-week night market in downtown Dubuque's Millwork District.

Over the past five years, Donnan and Stowell's hard work has paid off and was on full display with the first market event of the season this past Thursday evening.

While temperatures were unseasonably warm in the high-80s, Dubuque's happening and renovated warehouse neighborhood had a chill vibe in the massive brick building shadows. A slight breeze helped to keep people happy and relaxed. It made for a warm evening and a fun and friendly community gathering.

The Millwork Night Market's several blocks of activity are an excellent example of how an industrial neighborhood can transform into an accessible, equitable, and vibrant public space for all to enjoy.

The Voices in the Warehouse events preceded and helped spark awareness and excitement about the possibilities for the District. Undoubtedly, those well-attended events advanced Dubuque's emerging arts scene and paved the way in getting the Millwork renovations moving forward over the past two decades.

Today there are several dynamic businesses, offices, dining, and entertainment options in the Millwork District. So the "work" piece of the puzzle is covered. In addition, several wonderfully constructed lofts, apartments, and even nearby homes are available for purchase and rent, so people are certainly willing to "live" in the once industrial area.

The Millwork Night Market's attendance numbers indicate that people are thrilled also to come out and "play" in the area.

The large brick warehouses and industrial streetscape provide a sweet backdrop for the once-a-month night market. Its music, entrepreneurs selling food, produce, art, clothing, and other handcrafted goods demonstrate a bright, fun-filled future for the District.

The Millwork Night Market happens every second Thursday of each month through October. *The Market is on August 18 this year to avoid a conflict with the big ballgame in Dyersville.
