Original tracks like "I Wish Grandpas Never Died" and "There Was This Girl" already showcase Riley Green's lyrical prowess. Now, the singer doubles down on his songwriter inclinations with a cover of Josh Thompson's "Cold Beer With Your Name on It" that does the original version proud. Press play above to watch!

Green recently performed a live, acoustic performance of the song as part of Taste of Country's RISERS series, and he says that his first relationship with Thompson's music was as a fan. "I was a big Josh Thompson fan when he had that song 'Way Out Here.' That whole record was great to me. I was a fan," he explains.

Thompson released "Way Out Here" as the title track of an album in 2010, but it wasn't until years later when the two songwriters met in writer's rooms. Instantly, they clicked. "It's crazy to be in a room with someone like that that's not doing the artist thing anymore and think, 'How in the world did Josh Thompson not become the biggest thing ever?" Green wonders aloud to Taste of Country.

After releasing Way Out Here as his debut album, Thompson dropped a handful of charting country singles -- including 2013's "Cold Beer With Your Name Out" -- before focusing his attention on his songwriting career. He has co-written hits such as Jason Aldean's "Any Ol' Barstool" and "Drowns the Whiskey," as well as Blake Shelton's "I'll Name the Dogs."

Though Green and Thompson have plenty in common when it comes to songwriting -- they both have a penchant for heartache and a knack for vivid descriptions of small-town life -- Thompson actually didn't write "Cold Beer With Your Name on It." That song was penned by Brent Anderson and Clint Daniels.
