You've seen it on the national News, IRS scams just in time for tax season. And now its hit closer to home here in the Tri-States in Grant County, Wisconsin.  The Grant County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents of IRS scams. Authorities remind residents that the IRS corresponds through the mail regarding audits and taxes owed, not by telephone.

Here are five ways to spot IRS scams:

1 A call to either demand immediate payment or a call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.

2 A demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.

3. A requirement that you use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.

4.Asking for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

5. Threatening to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

If you get calls like this report them to your local police department immediately.
