Meet Tommy Rhomberg of Mount Vernon, Iowa. A young man who got the idea to make baseball bats out of wood felled by the August 10 derecho that struck the Midwest. Little did he know how popular they would become.

Tommy's family started a Facebook page that they call a "scrapbook" for Tommy. In one of the first posts, on August 29, they talk about how he and his family found used equipment online that Tommy could utilize to make the bats. A trip to Elkader the week before had left him ready to roll.

A woodpile like this may not look like much to most, but to Tommy, that's a pile of baseball bats just waiting to be made.

Tommy makes the bats out of seven different types of wood. There's ash, cherry, maple, oak, pine, walnut, and willow.

A couple of weeks ago, Tommy shipped his first 50 baseball bats. He now has orders for more than 100. Tommy and his family decided they'd donate twenty dollars of each bat sold to the Greater Cedar Rapids Foundation. That means a check for over $2,000 will be going to the foundation.

*Please note, Tommy is not accepting additional orders at this time. However, you can be put on a waiting list if he decides to continue to make them. More details on that are available HERE.
