Lindsay Ell Dropped From Radio Station Appearance Because of ‘Personal Life’

Lindsay Ell didn't take it lying down when a country radio station dropped her from a promotional concert for what she calls "personal reasons."

The singer-songwriter and guitarist turned to Twitter on Friday (June 16) to let her fans know that she would not be at a scheduled event, writing, "Had a scheduled performance in Sacramento today for listeners. The radio station has asked me not to come bc of my personal life. Sorry guys."

Ell did not call out the station by name, but the Washington Post reports that 105.1 FM KNCI in Sacramento had been promoting a live performance from Ell and Chase Bryant, who are both support acts on Brad Paisley's Weekend Warriors Tour that played in Sacramento Friday evening. Ell recently released a new EP, Worth the Wait.

The Post reports that Ell had been removed from the poster promoting the event by Friday morning, and notes the fact that Ell is in a relationship with radio personality Bobby Bones, whose syndicated The Bobby Bones Show airs on iHeartRadio stations across the country including Sacramento’s 92.5 FM the Bull. The Bull is a rival station to KNCI, which is owned by CBS Radio.

It's apparently not the first time Ell has taken professional heat for her relationship with Bones. The couple rarely discuss their private life publicly, and in response to a question from a fan asking if they were still together on Friday, she wrote, "don't worry. Everything is good! Some people just won't play my music if I talk about my personal life..."

The Bull stepped up to make up for the canceled concert, declaring Friday "Lindsay Ell Day" in Sacramento and asking her fans to come out to an in-studio performance from Ell. Bones also weighed in via Twitter.

In response to an outpouring of criticism from listeners, KNCI reversed their decision, inviting Ell to return at a later date.

"Lindsay is an amazingly talented, up-and-coming artist and today we regrettably made a bad decision to cancel her show," KNCI said in a statement to the Post. "We only hope that she — and our listeners — will forgive us, and that Lindsay and her team will allow us to reschedule the show."

CMT Senior Vice President for Music Strategy Leslie Fram also came out publicly to support Ell, posting to Instagram, "Dear Gatekeepers-Your decision to support an artist should be based solely on the artist and their music and nothing else."

Fram is one of the founding members of Change the Conversation, which helps advocate for women in country music.
