Why does common sense go out the window at airports?

I understand air travel can be stressful but why cause problems before you're even there?

If you've been picked up at an airport, you know the drill. It's an insane rush to get you and your luggage quickly stuffed in the car that's picking you up since everyone in line behind your car is waiting to do the same thing.

So now, while everyone is ticked over Flock cameras, lawmakers are ready to clock the morons who idle on the interstate and roads leading to O'Hare.

They're putting in cameras around a half-mile radius of the airport, including the Kennedy Expressway, and surrounding roads like Mannheim and Balmoral. It's not unusual to see 30ish cars idling on any of the roads by the airport.

Drivers idle on these areas and the interstate all the time trying to get to the airport despite signs telling them not to.

The O'Hare Driver Safety Act was passed and cameras were supposed to be installed last year, but the legislation forgot to include the Illinois Department of Transportation in it so the project is just now happening.

So now, if you're caught idling near O'Hare, you're paying a $100 fine.

The hope is that you'll use the cellphone lots or drive around the terminal. If you feel like you have no choice but to idle, remember that Google Maps, Waze, or whatever GPS you use will redirect you to follow whatever random path it sends you to eventually get to the airport.

Really, you shouldn't be idling in the road anyway, even if it's at a coffee drive-thru.
