After an eight year run that surely saw hundreds of thousands of customers served, a franchise eatery on Dubuque's west end has closed its doors for good.

Last week, I saw a vague Facebook post that questioned whether or not Pita Pit in Dubuque was closed, so while out to see a movie at AMC Dubuque on Sunday morning, I drove by to investigate for myself.

Indeed, Dubuque's Pita Pit location has closed. The restaurant's door has a sign posted as of last week, and the lights have been turned off for the final time. The sign on the door reads:

CLOSED: Thank you for your support over the years. We have made the decision to close this location. It has been a pleasure serving you and we appreciate your business. - per the sign posted on Pita Pit's door in Dubuque

From that statement, it's unclear whether the closing was solely the choice of the franchisee, or a directive from the corporation. A Canadian company, Pita Pit has been around since 1995. It specializes in serving pita sandwiches with fresh vegetables, grilled meat, and sauces.

Pita Pit is not ubiquitous across the country, with approximately 75 locations in the United States. The closure of the Dubuque location means the next closer for Tri-State residents is in Cedar Falls, IA.

Per an article from KCRG in 2019, the local Pita Pit was owned by Paul Unsen. I'm unsure if he remained the owner until the shop closed. As of this writing, the Dubuque location is still listed on Pita Pit's website. The phone number redirects to a hotline for singles.

Obviously, it remains to be seen what will occupy the storefront in the future. For one, Rusty Taco on the nearby Asbury Road has been turned into Exotico Bar & Grill, and appears to be doing well judging by reviews. With that in mind, it's fairly common to see restaurants turned into new ones very quickly, and shops don't tend to stay vacant in Asbury Plaza very long.
