The first frost of the fall is a sign that colder temperatures are here to stay. But just when will that first frost hit? The Farmer's Almanac has released its frost forecast for 2026. The map below is based on historical first frost and first freeze dates for the different regions of the United States. Just remember, your first frost could happen earlier or later depending on weather patterns and other factors.

When Will Iowa's First Frost Hit?

According to the Farmer's Almanac, Iowa's first frost could occur in early October through late October. In fact, they predict that Cedar Rapids will see its first frost of the season on October 7th. Hey...that's my birthday! Des Moines is predicted to see its first frost on October 14th.

In case you were curious, the first frost advisories last year were issued on October 22nd.

The Farmer's Almanac reminds people that frost dates for 2026 are an average, not a deadline. A Canadian cold front could bring frost sooner, or a warm fall could push the date back farther. Just something to ponder on a day when cooler thoughts might help.
