Matt Stell Returns to His Country Roots With New Song, ‘Where I’ll Be’ [Listen]

Matt Stell’s newest track "Where I'll Be" marks the singer-songwriter’s first release since the genre-bending “Better Angels,” his recent collaboration with R&B singer Ne-Yo.

The multi-platinum artist co-wrote the song with Spencer Jordan, Cole Miracle and Brett Truitt, using a punchy melody to declare his commitment to the finer things in small-town life.

What Inspired Matt Stell's New Song, "Where I'll Be"?

“This song came from when me and a couple songwriter buddies of mine got to talking about how much we love Chris Knight," he says.

"He’s one of the GOATs if you ask me. He had a song that Montgomery Gentry cut back in the day that said, “She changed her mind when she couldn’t change me," Stell shares.

"Another songwriter in the room started talking about a girlfriend at the time who had left their hometown to go chase her dreams, but eventually she made it back. So that’s where this song came from. Trying to channel one of the great ones and trying to tell a true story."

The result is a song that speaks to Stell's small-town roots, as well as his roots as an artist with songs including his breakthrough hit, "Prayed for You."

"I try to write true songs, whether it be autobiographical or things that i see or have seen," Stell states.

"This song sounds a little different from some of my other stuff, but the truth under it all is what all my music has in common, I think. So I hope people hear something new that is connected with what came before."
