Farmers' Almanac Predicts 'Polar Coaster' Spring

It may feel like spring is already here but it technically isn't just yet! We've been spoiled so far this winter and that is seemingly going to continue, as we don't have any major snowstorms or cold snaps in the near future.

In fact, we may even end up seeing our least snowy February of all time in the north. While winter can last well into April or May in the Northland, it seems like we may be in for an early spring. That doesn't necessarily mean we're in the clear, though.

The Farmer's Almanac Makes Spring Predictions

As always, the Farmers' Almanac has weighed in on spring all across the country, including our region. Overall, they are forecasting a 'polar coaster' spring for the entire country. Yikes!

What Does a 'Polar Coaster' Spring Mean?

You may be wondering what that means. Well, according to the Farmers' Almanac, this spring will bring back cold temperatures and they will be here to stay. Here's how they define a 'polar coaster' spring, per the video below:

This spring's weather may feel like a POLAR COASTER meaning that you should expect many highs and lows on the thermometer.

They also say that overall, our region will have a 'cool and stormy' spring season ahead. We are in between the chilled and rainy region and cool and unsettled weather.

What Else Is In The Forecast For?

The Farmers' Almanac dived even deeper into our region, writing that we can expect cold snaps AND the possibility of snow late into April. That's one prediction I hope does not come true.

If this is all a little bit of a buzzkill for you, you may want to stop reading. Why? Because they end their predictions by stating that a heavy storm will hit the midwest during Easter weekend, bringing lots of snow. Yay?

The 15 Least Snowy Winters On Record In Duluth History

Since the National Weather Service began keeping weather records in Duluth in the late 1800s, here are the 15 winters with the lowest snowfall totals on historical record.

It is worth noting that the official records from 1941-today have been recorded at the area now known as the Duluth International Airport (away from the lake, on top of the hill). Before then, various locations closer to Lake Superior had been used for official weather recording data. For anyone that knows anything about how Lake Superior and the hill play a role in temperature and snow, you can see how this makes older records inherently different.

While these records note the "least snowy winters", they actually include all seasonal snowfall from July 1 through June 30 of the following year.
