In many cases across the state,  more affluent school districts receive a greater amount of funding per student than poorer districts.  WalletHub released a ranking of all 333 Iowa school districts from most to least equitable.  The study compared  average household income and expenditures for public schools per pupil.

The Dubuque Community School District ranked 80th.  The Monticello Community School District was ranked in the top 10 at #6.  Other area districts include Calamus-Wheatland, #15, Maquuoketa Valley, #88, Bellevue, #131, Maquoketa, #172, Edgewood-Colesburg, #188, Western Dubuque, #213, and Clayton Ridge, #249.
