Yesterday I discovered there is indeed such a thing as a mullet competition. Just when you thought it couldn't get any stranger than the annual Fourth of July hot dog eating contest!

Indeed, the USA Mullet Championships is a thing. Separated into two divisions (kids and teens), people vote online for the boy with their favorite iteration of the "business in the front, party in the back" hairstyle. In 2021, a kid from Menomonie, WI placed third in the teen division. Now, an eight-year-old boy from Eau Claire, WI is gunning for the title in the kids division.

Known to his friends as "Mullet Boy," Emmitt Bailey advanced into the top 25 in the respective division. The votes have been pouring in for the kid with the rock-star hairdo and fun-loving personality.

The winner of the contest gets their name in lights on the USA Mullet Championships' website along with a hefty $2,500 check. Should Emmitt win, he says he wants to spend the money on a go-kart, as his family is big into racing.

Eric Bailey, Emmitt's dad, is a big supporter of his son's hairstyle and the fun competition at hand. He told a local news outlet that he loves seeing the hairstyle remain popular well-into the 2020s:

Mullets in general, they've come back in full force. It was $10 to enter and all of the donations are going to the Michigan Wig Foundation for kids.

If he isn't already aware, one could assume Billy Ray Cyrus, who has been rocking a mullet since his single "Achy Breaky Heart" was atop the country and pop charts, would have nothing but good things to say about this competition!

The final round of voting in the 2022 USA Mullet Championships began Monday, August 15th. It continues until this Friday, August 19th. You can cast your vote on the competition's website here!
