The restaurant scene in Dubuque has expanded in recent years, with fantastic new spots like L. May, Brazen, and Pete's Thai Kitchen bringing fresh new flavors to town.

No doubt that new options are always excellent, but the longtime authentic well-worn local joints remain enjoyable too.

Thankfully, Dubuque has a few family-owned restaurants and bars that have been serving Dubuquers for decades. Neighborhood joints like Mario's, Marcos, Paul's Tavern, Knickers, and West Dubuque Tap come to mind.

Another longtime Northend favorite is the Europa Haus Restaurant and Bier Stube, located at 1301 Rhomberg Avenue. Locals mainly know it as the Bier Stube and have enjoyed authentic German food and beer here for 32 years.

I've not been in the place for nearly a decade myself. Yet, the Bier Stube remains as familiar as ever, and that's a good thing from the German Bier steins, wood-paneled walls adorned with kitschy European flare, Chicago Cubs memorabilia, and the delicious German food, of course.

One summer during college, I landed a job waiting tables and cooking at the German Corner, a family-owned restaurant in Tacoma, Washington.

Looking back, I believe they only hired me because my last name, Breitbach, was German enough to make me dang near one of the family. To owner Jurgen and Omi, the grandmother, I might as well have been a recent immigrant to America. Nonetheless, I received a crash course in all things German that summer.

I learned to appreciate authentic German food like Beef Rouladen, Goulash, Sauerbraten, Schnitzel, Spaetzle, Sauerkraut, Beer, Jägermeister, and Oompah music. All of that and more is available at the Bier Stube, to my relief and satisfaction.

First opened 32 years ago, Chicago transplants Joe Weiblinger and his wife Sylvia have made the Bier Stube their home for the past twenty years. Joe bartends, while Sylia is the chef cooking authentic, fresh, homemade German favorites.

"It's teamwork. Sylvia knows what she's doing in the kitchen, I'm behind the bar, and we serve great food and beer to good people."

Each weekday lunch features two items, sandwiches, and homemade chicken and cabbage soup. Dinner has familiar German fare, and for dessert, there's Sylvia's homemade Caramel Apple Nut Pie.
