DRA Board members voted unanimously to approve the funding at their monthly meeting yesterday (10/25) at Q Casino. The money is the remainder of the organization's funds for mission grants, which address requests of anywhere from $50,000 to $500,000. So far this year, the DRA has given $3.13 million in awards to recipients; both requests of up to $50,000 and the larger mission grants.

The largest grant given out was for a joint request from the three Dubuque colleges; Clarke, Loras, and the University of Dubuque. The institutions were awarded $200,000 for the Dubuque Promise Program, which will establish a "last-dollar" scholarship fund. This grant will allow local students up to $5,000 per year, for up to four years as a full-time student. Anyone receiving these funds must agree to live and work in Dubuque County after graduation for the length of time they received the funding. The goal is to incentivize current scholarship students to ply their trades in our local workforce.

Other Grants provided to local businesses include;

  • The Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA received $160,000 to go toward its effort to construct a new facility. The Dubuque Y is currently securing a new location and is looking to make an official announcement soon.
  • Crescent Community Health Center received $125,000 that will go toward a new wellness center, available for use by the whole community. This wellness center will be located in an existing building at 15th and Elm streets, near the center's current location.
  • Boys and Girls Club of Greater Dubuque received $100,000 to pay for upgrades to its arts and crafts room. The organization plans to implement science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, or STEM programming, into curriculum. They will also update some of their current technologies.
  • Hills & Dales received $100,000 towards its efforts to construct a state-of-the-art facility, specifically for autism services. As of now, Hills & Dales has acquired the building at 1660 Embassy West Drive for the $3.1 million project. Plans are to consolidate services currently provided by Hills & Dales' two Dubuque autism clinics.

The DRA’s main mission is to provide for social, economic and community betterment and lessens the burden of Dubuque city and area government, while contributing to the growth and viability of Dubuque area tourism. This is all done through revenue generated by their gaming and entertainment facilities.
