‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ Gets an Official Release Date

Lucasfilm
Lucasfilm

When Lucasfilm initially announced Star Wars: Episode IX, the tentative plan was to release it in theaters on May 23, 2019 — that date was never confirmed, however, and when the studio shifted their releases to December (with the exception of the young Han Solo spinoff), everyone just assumed that it was only a matter of time before Episode IX’s release date was changed, too. That’s definitely not the case, as Disney and Lucasfilm have announced a metric Jabba-ton of new release dates, officially confirming the final film in their Star Wars trilogy for May 24, 2019.

The announcement comes via the official Star Wars website, which reveals that Episode IX will hit theaters on May 24, 2019 — just one day off from the previously suggested date of May 23. Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow is set to helm the conclusion to the trilogy, which will mark the end of the Skywalker family saga…but that doesn’t mean that Star Wars itself will end, as Lucasfilm has said that there are more stories in mind beyond the Skywalkers and Episode IX.

But May 2019 is pretty far from now, and we have two more films to get through before we get there: The Last Jedi, written and directed by Rian Johnson, is set to hit theaters on December 15, 2017, followed by what Disney is officially referring to as Untitled Han Solo Star Wars Anthology Film on May 25, 2018. (To be honest, they should just keep that title. It’s scrappy.)
