Any pop culture aficionado of a certain age will remember the dueling video game fandoms of the 1990s. You were either a Nintendo person or a Sega person, and death to the morons who thought differently! However, the drama between suburban living rooms had nothing on the drama behind the scenes, where the young Sega company fought tooth and nail to compete with Nintendo, who had a stranglehold on the video game industry. This fascinating story is about to become a book called ‘Console Wars’ and that book will become a movie by way of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Rogen and Goldberg are, of course, the talented writers behind ‘Pineapple Express’ and the writers/directors of last year’s ‘This Is the End,’ both of which also starred Rogen. In other words, they’re really funny, talented guys with more than a few hits under their belts. However, ‘Console Wars’ sounds significantly different than anything they’ve tackled before.

According to Variety, this isn’t a wacky stoner comedy or apocalyptic adventure bromance, but a story of cutthroat business that will have more in common with ‘Moneyball’ and ‘The Social Network’ than anything they previously tackled. Rogen and Goldberg are looking to stretch their moviemaking muscles and that can only be a good thing. Sony, who watched ‘This Is the End’ become one of the more unlikely hits of 2013, will distribute.

Author Blake Harris’ ‘Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo and the Battle that Defined a Generation’ doesn’t hit shelves until August, but here’s the book’s description via Amazon:

In 1990, Nintendo had a virtual monopoly on the video game industry. Sega, on the other hand, was just a faltering arcade company with big aspirations and even bigger personalities. But that would all change with the arrival of Tom Kalinske, a man who knew nothing about videogames and everything about fighting uphill battles. His unconventional tactics, combined with the blood, sweat and bold ideas of his renegade employees, transformed Sega and eventually led to a ruthless David-and-Goliath showdown with rival Nintendo … The battle was vicious, relentless, and highly profitable, eventually sparking a global corporate war that would be fought on several fronts: from living rooms and schoolyards to boardrooms and Congress. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, no-holds-barred conflict that pitted brother against brother, kid against adult, Sonic against Mario, and the US against Japan.

Interestingly, Harris will also co-direct a documentary based on his book with Goldberg and Rogen, meaning that there will be two ‘Console Wars’ movies in existence in a few years — the hard facts documentary version and the fictionalized narrative version. This is already a fascinating subject matter, but the thought of being able to compare the two films should have film fans interested. Even if you’re not a fan of video games, the results should be worth keeping an eye on.

Rogen and Goldberg are also attached to AMC’s adaptation of the popular comic ‘Preacher’ and are apparently being considered for the adaptation of the ‘Uncharted’ video game franchise. They are very, very busy men.
