Iowa Insurance Division issues consumer alert regarding Anthem data breach

Policyholder personal information compromised in cyber attack

Anthem, Inc. reported Wednesday evening that it had been a victim of a sophisticated cyber incident and that the personal information of its policyholders has been compromised.  Anthem, Inc has two companies doing business in Iowa.   The IID is working to determine the number of Iowans impacted.

The breach is believed to have occurred in late January. An initial analysis conducted by Anthem showed the information that was accessed were member names, member health identification numbers, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, employment information and income data.

"As Iowa’s insurance regulator, we take the issue of cyber security very seriously," said Nick Gerhart, Commissioner of the Iowa Insurance Division.  "Unfortunately, this data breach affected an unknown number of Iowans as well as consumers throughout the country. As we continue to gather additional information from Anthem, we will ensure impacted Iowans receive the information they need to protect themselves against financial hardships as a result of the breach. Consumers should continue to watch their banking and other financial accounts for suspicious activity and contact Anthem if they need additional information."

Anthem said it is not aware of any fraudulent activity against policyholders that has occurred as a result of the breach. The insurer is taking immediate steps to notify each impacted Iowan.  Anthem will provide information to impacted policyholders on how to enroll in free credit-monitoring and identity-protection services.

Consumers who believe they may have been impacted by the security breach should call 877-263-7995, the toll-free number Anthem has established to assist consumers. Anthem has also set up a special website at www.anthemfacts.com to answer questions. Consumers may also contact the IID at 877-955-1212.
