With fewer applications than expected the Dubuque Police Department is still looking for additional candidates for the Citizen Police Academy. Here are the details.

The Dubuque Police Department is currently accepting applications from Dubuque citizens wishing to participate in the 19th annual session of the Citizen’s Police Academy (CPA). The purpose of this program is to build a better understanding between citizens and police through education. The CPA does not certify participants as law enforcement officers. All sessions are taught by law enforcement professionals and other members of the Criminal Justice System. Classroom time includes presentations on arrest procedures, search & seizure, use of force, laws & policies, police procedures, domestic abuse cases, sexual abuse cases, drug enforcement, OWI’s, officer safety, and prevention programs.

Applications are currently being accepted with a deadline of January 16th, 2015 hs now been extended to January 23, 2015. Applications can be obtained at the Police Department or www.cityofdubuque.org/cpa.

The requirements for participation are:

*Must be a resident of the City of Dubuque and *Must be at least 18 years of age

*No felony convictions and *No significant arrest history

There will be ten sessions beginning February 5th, 2015, running through April 9th, 2015.  Sessions will be held at the law center on Thursday evenings, beginning at 6:00 p.m. and concluding at 9:00 p.m.  As part of the experience, attendees will participate in one 4-hour ride-along with a DPD Officer.  Class size is limited. Those selected should commit to attending all ten sessions unless exigent circumstances arise warranting an absence
