Social Security Benefits Increase for Some Iowa Residents Starting Today (3/12/2025)
Iowa retirees and Supplemental Security Income recipients should mark their calendars! The Social Security Administration has confirmed that a new round of benefit payments is scheduled for today, March 12th. Even better, some recipients could be receiving up to $5,180 depending on their earnings history.
So, who’s getting paid first? If you meet any of these conditions, you can expect your deposit today!
- You started receiving Social Security before May of 1997.
- You get Supplemental Security Income in addition to your Social Security benefits.
- Your birthday falls between the 1st and 10th of any month.
If you don’t qualify for this round, don’t worry! Here’s the rest of the March schedule:
- March 19: For those born between the 11th and 20th.
- March 26: For those born between the 21st and 31st.
New Rule Could Mean Bigger Checks for Some Iowans
In addition to March’s regular payments, the recently passed Social Security Fairness Act could mean higher monthly benefits, and even retroactive payments, for certain retirees.

This new law eliminates the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO), which previously reduced Social Security payments for public service workers who also had non-covered employment.
This change primarily benefits retired teachers, firefighters, police officers, and other public service employees who worked jobs that didn’t pay into Social Security. If you’re eligible, you may receive a one-time retroactive payment. These checks officially begin today (3/12/25). Additionally, a higher monthly check will begin in April of 2025.
What Should Iowans Do Now?
If you’re expecting a payment, keep an eye on your bank account or mailbox. For those eligible under the Social Security Fairness Act, watch for an official notification from the Social Security Administration detailing your updated benefits.
With costs rising across Iowa and the nation as a whole, these payments could make a major difference. That being said, it's important to make sure you're informed and prepared. For updates or questions, visit the official SSA website to stay protected from scams and misinformation.
