This year, lots of the best songs were written by the artists themselves. So when the CMA Awards Song of the Year winner is announced, we're likely to see at least one famous face take the stage to accept. Will the winner be Thomas Rhett's sweet song for his wife or Eric Church's own love letter to music icons and vinyl records? Tim McGraw's 2016 hit is also a strong contender with its call to be kind, but it could be one of country music's new female acts -- Cam or Maren Morris -- who takes home the win instead.

When Cam sat down to write "Burning House" with Tyler Johnson and Jeff Bhasker, she was pulling inspiration from real life ... sort of. The team wrote it right after Cam woke up from a dream about her ex-boyfriend stuck inside a burning house; she likens their writing process to a "therapy session." "Burning House" earned the singer her first platinum single, a headlining tour and a CMA nod, not just for Song of the Year, but for Music Video of the Year as well.

McGraw's single "Humble and Kind" has already earned a ton of notoriety -- not to mention a CMT Music Award for Video of the Year -- in 2016. Written by Lori McKenna, the song has a message that McGraw says "needed to be heard," and that's definitely happening now. Not only has "Humble and Kind" made its way into many of the biggest categories at the 2016 CMA Awards (including Single of the Year and Music Video of the Year), it's also about to become a children's book!

Another song up for multiple awards at the 50th annual CMAs, Church's "Record Year" shares the same nominated categories as "Humble and Kind." Written by Church and Jeff Hyde, "Record Year" celebrates the power of music -- not only to heal a broken heart, but to remind us who we are as artists and human beings. The touching music video features Church and his bandmates listening to some of their favorite vintage vinyls. Will "Record Year" become a classic like the very songs it praises?

"My Church" is Morris' debut single from her debut studio album, and the song (and its singer) have already generated quite a bit of buzz in advance of the 2016 CMA Awards. Morris tops the pack of nominees, earning the most nominations this year, including two nods for "My Church" and one for Hero, the record on which the track appears. Written with famed writer busbee, "My Church" is about the spiritual experience of driving around with the radio turned up loud.

When Rhett sat down with Sean Douglas and Joe Spargur to write "Die a Happy Man," he had one particular person in mind. Inspired by his wife Lauren, Rhett wrote the song while on the road and finishing up his second studio album, Tangled Up.

"She’s always wanted me to write like a “Just to See You Smile” by Tim McGraw," Rhett says about the song, adding that his track shares the sentiment.
