Staff at Mines of Spain State Recreation Area ask for volunteer help this week to clean several areas recently vandalized with spray paint.

In a Facebook post Sunday, staff said they plan to start cleaning spray-painted rocks and trees around Horseshoe Bluff. Staff purchased cleaning supplies, including wire brushes, chisels and paint remover, to provide for volunteers.

Park Ranger Wayne Buccholtz said cleaning will be done from 1 to 4 p.m. May 4th and again on Friday May 8th, starting at 9 a.m. He said how long the cleaning efforts will take will depend on the weather and the volunteer turnout.

Volunteers can call the park office at 563-556-0620 for updated times and locations of cleaning crews.

Buchholtz said staff still are investigating who is responsible for the graffiti and have a list of suspects. He asked anyone with information to contact the park office.
