Because we live here we sometimes forgot about the great places to visit.  Case in point.

The Dubuque County Historical Society’s historic sites, the Old Jail Museum and the Mathias Ham House Historic Site will open at 11 AM on Saturday, May 23rd.  Both locations will be open 11 Am to 4 Pm Wednesday through Sunday.

The Old Jail Museum is offering an extension of A City Divided: Dubuque During the Civil War, an original exhibit from the Dubuque County Historical Society, Loras College staff and students, and is supported by the A.Y. McDonald Charitable Foundation and the Institute of Museum & Library Services. The exhibit explores the local home front during our Nation’s bloodiest conflict. Civil War artifacts, an audio tour, and an original short film “Dubuque: A City Divided” highlight the exhibit. The Old Jail Museum is located at 8th and Central in downtown Dubuque, IA.

The Mathias Ham House presents At the Lead Mines featuring a recreated miner’s “Badger Hole” subterranean dwelling and a replica walk-in mine shaft. Visitors may also tour the rooms of the stately Ham House, experience frontier life at the Arriandeau Log House and Humke One-room School. The Mathias Ham House Historic Site is located at 2241 Lincoln Avenue, Dubuque, IA.

Members of the Dubuque County Historical Society are admitted free. Non-member admission to each historic site is $5.00 for adults (18+) and $3.50 for Youth (3-17).

For ease of parking, guests are also encouraged to park at the Museum & Aquarium and take advantage of the City of Dubuque’s Free Summer Trolley service. Stops include the Museum & Aquarium, the Mathias Ham House, and 9th & Main (a short walk from the Old Jail Museum).
