Drinking Water Advisory Issued for Portion of Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The City of Dubuque Water Department is recommending residents in a portion of Dubuque to boil the water before using for drinking or to use an alternative water source for drinking.

The City of Dubuque Water Department had a water main break in the City’s first pressure zone of the distribution system and the system lost pressure on at 1:30 a.m. this morning (Tuesday, May 3). Due to the potential for bacterial contamination, it is recommended that the water be boiled before using for drinking or cooking or that an alternative source be used. Areas affected by this Boil Water

Advisory are: starting at the south end of Dubuque at Huff Street going along the west edge (the Downtown Flats Area) South Locust, Bluff St., West Locust to Rosedale continuing on Central Ave. through Diagonal Street. Kaufmann Avenue to North Grandview Ave., Burlington to W. 32nd St. detention pond and Central Ave north. Pinard St., to Thomas Place & High Bluff, Lincoln Ave to Rhomberg Avenue & Olympic Heights Area. (See map at www.cityofdubuque.org/water.)

THIS IS NOT A BOIL ORDER, BUT AN ADVISORY. IT IS RECOMMENDED NOT TO DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST.
Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. The water may be used for bathing and other similar purposes.

For more information, please contact the City of Dubuque Water Department at (563) 589-4291. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1(800) 426-4791 and athttps://www.epa.gov/your-drinking-water/safe-drinking-water-hotline.

The water department has repaired and repressurized the system and bacteria samples are currently being collected. This advisory is a precaution until bacterial sample results are available, usually within 48 hours. The public will be notified when the results are available and the advisory is lifted. Dubuque Water Distribution staff will be flushing hydrants within the first pressure zone.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has been notified and an action plan has been implemented to resolve the situation.
