On Friday (Feb. 9), Cam dropped the music video for her newest single, "Diane," and it's a heavy-hitter. Readers can press play above to watch the emotional story play out.

Cam wrote "Diane" as a response of sorts to Dolly Parton's classic tune "Jolene," from the perspective of the other woman. In the song's accompanying music video, Cam plays the mistress -- a nightclub singer who issues an apology to her wandering beau's betrayed wife.

"And all those nights that he's given me / I wish I could give them back to you," Cam sings in the song's first verse, leading into the sweeping chorus: "Diane, I promise I didn't know he was your man / I would have noticed a gold wedding band / Diane, I'd rather you hate me than not understand."

Throughout the video, blissfully ignorant household scenes between husband, wife and child play out as Cam's character makes her confession via song. After seeing her beau and his wife driving away together, the mistress makes a call to his wife -- and although she's clearly devastated, the two meet and later, so it seems, wordlessly come to an understanding.

"[The "Diane" video covers] the general theme of women speaking to women and being honest in a really difficult situation that neither one of them chose," Cam tells People. "I wanted to make sure that a lot of people that have been through this feel like this wasn’t sensationalized — because this is a lot of people’s story. I’ve seen people in crowds now that sing the s--t out of this song; they’re owning all these lyrics. So I wanted to get it right and make it raw and real and mean something."

"Diane" is the first single from Cam's upcoming sophomore album. A release date for the project has not yet been announced.
