Existing grade structures would remain intact, but attendance boundaries will shift next school year under a recommendation agreed upon Thursday by the Western Dubuque school board to balance lopsided enrollment across the district's elementary schools.

Superintendent Jeff Corkery recommended the district maintain pre-K through fourth grades at its six elementary schools and keep Bernard Elementary School open, but he said the building still could be eyed for closure should its enrollment numbers fail to improve.

Under the recommendation, which requires a final vote of the board at its Monday meeting, the district would shrink the boundary lines for Dyersville elementary school and expand those for Epworth and Farley. Boundaries for Peosta, Bernard and Cascade grade schools would not change.

Students in New Vienna attending Dyersville would be moved to Farley Elementary. Students from Holy Cross, Bankston, Sherrill and Balltown areas would go from Farley to Epworth Elementary.
